Just as I prepared for one of the most casual days I was in the Salt Lake City, Utah, volunteering on Capitol Hill and everything went full circle and I will always remember this day. This day was February 15, 2011. The Utah Capitol is known for making history and sending shock waves around the world and yet it’s still known as the Peoples House. This is where democracy operates, which is a very important place for each Citizen. It’s commonly known, that this is a place where minds, hearts, eyes, and hands all finally meet to make the world a better place.
When I was a youth in Los Angeles, California, I participated in the Boy Scouts of America. There was an activity where my Scout Master Michael Orton led myself and others on a life learning hike and a rock climbing expedition.
We went and learned:
I asked to be taken to the Hospital and I prayed like no other time in my life, for him to be okay. Everyone was terrified and preparing for the worst. After a few hours I heard some remarkable news. He was up walking around and wasn’t happy that they cut up all his clothes. This had me chuckling with tears and excitement. Someone needed to grab him some clothes and we I was given a ride home.
After learning so much already that day I was given a learning experience on how there are miracles and how the higher power does listen to prayers. Michael gave me a gift to always remember our experiences together, it was a tiny palm flashlight. Now this flashlight wasn’t any ordinary flashlight, it was broken. He said it was given to him and it was a reminder for me to always rely on our higher power for light and strength. These learning experiences have been molded into the very fiber that is a significant contributor to any good I do with others.
On Tuesday February 15th I was in a Capitol Hill hearing and walked out and a gentleman approached me and thought I was a man by the name of David. As we gazed into each others eyes our hands began to reach for a handshake and in an instant it changed into a hug and smile. This gentleman was my mentor, Scout Master, leader, and friend Michael Orton. From their we discussed how to make the world a better place.

We went and learned:
- You have to learn and then practice
- You have to take on more responsibility
- You have to trust the other person
- Effective Communication is essential
- You have to conquer your fear
- It's OK to make mistakes
- It's OK to get frustrated; eventually you will get it
- It's OK if you fall. You catch yourself and start from there.
- If you fall all the way down, start over again
- Remain calm
- When you're facing the edge, have faith in your support
- You just have to find the right rocks
