About the Atlas Shrugged novel: Atlas Shrugged is a novel that has generated inspiration and controversy since its publication in 1957.

Its theme is the role of individual achievement in society and its goal is to demonstrate what can happen when individual achievement is undervalued, suppressed and demonized. Complex characters embody heroism and evil, in a plot that combines drama, mystery, romance, and science fiction - the result is ultimately inspirational, not apocalyptic.

Dagny Taggart is one of the finest female heroines in modern literature: intelligent, courageous, and as beautiful as she is strong. She is a rare screen example of life lived on one's own terms, for one's own values. Steel magnate Henry Rearden says, "My goal is to make money" with pride. He is an industrialist who improves the quality of life for all - and values his reward. Atlas Shrugged's villains are evil, but as familiar as our local neighbor - as they undercut and subvert talent and achievement.

Hello Representatives and Friends,

Please email, call, text, the reps listed on the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Enforcement Committee or attend this meeting.

Utah will soon have a protocol for dealing with Illegal Immigration. HB0070 is summarized below.

HB0070 is being heard in committee today Friday, February 11th at 2pm in Rm 25 of the Capitol House Building West Side. Please feel free to invite all who are interested to attend.

I urge for the members of the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee to pass the HB0070 bill for a House & Senate up or down vote immediately.

I spoke with Governor Herbert for several minutes last Thursday, on February 3rd. I asked him to support Rep. Sandstrom and HB0070 bill. He said he already supports Representative Sandstrom and that he will sign the Sandstrom Illegal Immigration Bill as long as it's not a large Omnibus bill and it follows his 6 points he's outlined. He also mentioned that he has sat down privately with Representative Sandstrom and Representative Robles reviewing the bill and is just waiting for the House and Senate to do it's process in providing him the bill to sign. With all truthfulness Governor Herbert looked me in the eye and told me he was ready to sign the bill as is. I trust that you will do your part to ensure the bill upholds the Governors six guiding principles and will send the bill for passage.

These are Governor Gary Herbert six guiding Principles:

1. There must be respect for the law. The Utah solution must acknowledge that U.S. citizenship - by birth or grant - requires reverence for and adherence to the law.

2. The federal government has a responsibility to secure our borders, to enforce immigration laws, and to draft meaningful immigration policy. The federal government must act.

3. There must be greater accountability from the private sector. Businesses must be responsible for establishing hiring practices that comply with the law to verify legal documentation of all workers.

4. The Utah solution should recognize and respect the humanity of all people. Immigration reform efforts must be fair, colorblind and race- neutral.

5. We must provide appropriate tools for law enforcement. The Utah solution must give law enforcement officers the ability, through resources and training, to enforce the law and to keep our communities safe.

6. We must relieve the burden on taxpayers. There are significant societal costs associated with illegal immigration that simply must be addressed. Our Utah communities, and our taxpayers, cannot be expected bear this financial burden.

To review Representative Sandstroms HB0070 please follow this link: http://stephensandstrom.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Sept.-Immigration.pdf or http://le.utah.gov/~2011/bills/hbillint/hb0070.htm

On a personal note I have honestly gone to bed crying some nights over this issue and praying for us to move past the hate rhetoric speech. This is a tough thing for Utah to do and I know this more than anyone. I have personally received a death threat in December for publicly being pro legal immigration. My Mother immigrated to the United States from Colombia and my Father is a Military Vet and I was born in 1984 in California after a few years of Marriage. I am a Hispanic Conservative Republican who has himself surrounded by great friends from many Nations. I have personally gone to Mexico, after the death threat, under heavy protection to visit and see the immigration situation for myself. I have attended numerous events in Utah listening to groups of concerned Utah Citizens discuss the illegal Immigration and the HB0070 bill. My heart is tender and full of love for Legal Immigration. Let's push this bill forward and make the right step for Legal Immigration in the Great State of Utah for us today and many great years of prosperity and pursuit of happiness for us all in the future!

Dear Friends,

Here in Utah, we have a lot to be grateful for this Thanksgiving weekend. Despite unprecedented challenges this year, we’ve experienced some significant victories thanks to friends like you!

I am so thankful that I’ve seen tremendous growth of our young grass roots organizing.

This past election, we ousted in Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett in his bid to serve a fourth term out of the Utah GOP convention. Then we elected Mike Lee to replace him. Were sending our message of Constitutionally Limited Government and Principled Representation to Washington!

And of course we re-elected U.S. Congressman Jason Chaffetz to a second term. This is where I recall we made history by ousting Republican Chris Cannon in his bid to serve a seventh term out of Utah Republican Primary back in 2008.

On a National scale this November, 39 members of Congress who voted against Audit the Fed lost their reelection bids. Woot! Woot! Thank you Social Networking! Truth and Light will cleanse Washington!

The work continues to roll forth. We need your eyes and ears. When I travel the State of Utah I love how people come up to me and say "your everywhere", "What office do you hold?", or "When are you running for office?" and I love the look on peoples faces when I say I am as important as you are because I am voter. I guess I could say I am a Utah Young Republican Delegate. But seriously if voters went to the polls in large numbers with one heart and mind then we can continue to make history, as we've done.

So as we gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving Weekend, I wanted to take a brief moment to thank you for all your efforts over the past year.

None of these successes would have been possible without your support, and for that, I am truly thankful. And I look forward to even greater things in 2011 as we continue working together to reclaim the Republic and restore the Constitution.

I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Holidays,

Keith Kuder

Your contributions and volunteer efforts in securing the nomination for Mike as well as our message of Constitutionally Limited Government and Principled Representation have been truly astounding.

Throughout Utah, thousands of grassroots volunteers made phone calls, stood on street corners and even knocked on doors to get out the vote. Without that outpouring of energy and your continued support throughout the election, last night would have ended differently.

We are humbled and greatly appreciative of your support.

We would like to thank Mr. Tim Bridgewater and all of his supporters for running an honorable campaign, voicing a strong message to help us bring principled change to our country. We look forward to working with Mr. Bridgewater, his staff and his supporters as we take Utah's message to D.C.

Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett of Utah has been ousted in his bid to serve a fourth term after failing to make it out of the Utah GOP convention.

Attorney Mike Lee and businessman Tim Bridgewater are the remaining Republican candidates after Saturday's vote. After a third round of voting, neither nominee received 60 percent of the vote, so both will head to the Utah primary on June 22.

Bennett was a distant third in the second round of voting among nearly 3,500 delegates, netting about 27 percent of the vote.

Wiping away tears, Bennett called the political atmosphere "toxic" and said it's, "Clear some of the votes I've cast have added to that toxic environment, looking back with one or two minor exceptions, I wouldn't cast any any differently, even if I knew it would cost me my career."

The three-term senator was targeted by Tea Party activists and other groups for supporting the first traunch of TARP, or Troubled Assets Relief Program.

Bennett, 76, is the first incumbent to lose his seat in Washington this year.

Critics also say Bennett broke a promise he made during his initial campaign to only serve two terms. He was vying for his fourth term.

Aides to Bennett blame outside groups for "distorting" his position on multiple issues, such as the auto bailouts, the stimulus and health care reform. Bennett voted against all of those measures.

Bennett isn't the only Republican lawmaker in trouble as other moderate candidates across the country find themselves being abandoned by GOP voters in favor of those backed by Tea Party activists, such as with Senate races in Arizona, Kentucky and New Hampshire.

In Florida, Gov. Charlie Crist decided to run for Senate as an independent rather than face an almost certain primary defeat at the hands of Tea Party favorite Marco Rubio, Florida's former state House speaker.

DNC Chairman Tim Kaine emphasized the Tea Partiers' role in recent primary politics.

"This is just the latest battle in the corrosive Republican intra-party civil war that has resulted in the Tea Party devouring two Republicans in just as many weeks," Kaine said. "If there was any question before, there should now be no doubt that the Republican leadership has handed the reigns to the Tea Party."

Bennett's seven Republican rivals contend he no longer has the credentials to represent "ultraconservative" Utah.

Lee, 38, and Bridgewater, 49, have campaigned largely by saying they're better suited to pare down government spending than Bennett.

"I will fight every day as your U.S. senator for limited government, to end the cradle-to-grave entitlement mentality, for a balanced budget, to protect our flag, our borders and our national security and for bills that can be read before they receive a final vote in congress," Lee said in his convention speech.

The opposition to Bennett is specific, and can't be chalked up solely to a general anti-incumbency fervor. Neither of Utah's two Republican congressmen are at risk of losing their seats, and Republican Gov. Gary Herbert doesn't have any serious challengers.

But Bennett's vote to bail out Wall Street left many Republicans feeling he had become too much of a Washington insider. He's also come under fire for co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill mandating health insurance coverage and for aggressively pursuing earmarks.

With anecdotal evidence mounting that Sen. Bob Bennett may lose his bid for a fourth term at the Republican Party's nominating convention next month, some have wondered if he might run as an independent, as Sen. Joe Lieberman did successfully after he was knocked out in the Democratic primary in Connecticut.

But Utah law forbids Bennett from doing what Lieberman did, even though polls indicate Bennett's popularity with the general public, as opposed to the small delegate pool voting in the state GOP convention May 8, is still fairly high.

The reason he can't do it: The J. Bracken Lee law.

While Bennett is getting hammered from his party's far-right wing, which seems to have a hold on a good portion of the convention delegates, his lack of options in trying to retain his seat is the result of one of Utah's original far-right politicians, who was widely popular, and equally controversial, in his day.

Utah law bans a candidate from being certified on the ballot as an independent after he already has been certified as a candidate by a political party. So, because Bennett filed for re-election as a Republican, he couldn't refile as an independent and be put on the ballot, even if he had done so before the filing deadline passed in March.

That law was passed in 1957, a year after Lee, who had served eight years as governor, was defeated in his bid for a third term at the state GOP convention by George Dewey Clyde, who went on to

win the election to become Utah's 10th governor. But after his convention defeat, orchestrated by Republican Sen. Arthur Watkins, Lee filed as an independent, making it an interesting three-way race and causing some discomfort for the state Republican Party, which had enjoyed political dominance during the 1950s.

Lee got his revenge two years later when Watkins was up for re-election and Lee filed as an independent. The law was already in effect prohibiting him from getting certified as an independent if he had been certified first as a Republican. So he never filed as a Republican that year. Lee was still popular with anti-tax conservatives in the party, so he split the Republican vote, giving the election to Democrat Ted Moss.

Lee could have been the original tea-party guy, without the birth certificate, death-panel and "Hitler-gave-good-speeches too" idiocy. He was an opponent of the income tax and believed in small government. As governor, he balanced the budget without raising taxes by drastically cutting spending. He became a national figure in his first term when he declared he would not pay the portion of his income tax that he calculated would be spent on the Korean War.

I knew J. Bracken Lee and interviewed him several times. This original anti-tax, right-wing icon, I believe, would be supporting Bennett, who, despite what you hear at tea parties, is a respected conservative in Washington.

While Lee had his issues with Watkins, he and the other Republican senator -- Wallace F. Bennett, the current senator's father -- campaigned for each other and got along quite well, even when the senior Bennett was attacked from the right wing. The John Birch Society claimed Bennett was soft on Communism, especially when he backed an agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union to set up consulates in the other's country.

In 1968, that faction ran anti-communist Mark Anderson, who had enough convention support to force the three-term Bennett into a primary. In that larger arena, and in the general election, Bennett won easily.

Whether his son will likewise gain a fourth term remains to be seen, of course. But thanks to J. Bracken Lee, the Lieberman option is out.

Dear Fellow Republican,

When I decided to run to become your new Utah County Republican Party Secretary, I campaigned on a need for responsible change for our Party.

Not a change of our core values, but real change of how we go about listening to our delegates, how we communicate our message from the bottom up to our Republican leaders. We need and can get ourselves to be better organized to win elections with the best GOP representatives. A fair, open dialog and healthy competition amongst Republicans gives us the best Republican leaders to step forward and lead our GOP party. It simply is not enough to say you’re a Republican anymore. We need to see our leaders live it to the core. As Jason Chaffetz is sleeping in his cot.

While I'm excited about the challenges and opportunities we face, I have no illusions. I am fully aware of the hard work ahead and obstacles we must overcome to give ourselves some fair and balanced Republican blood.

But this isn't about me -- I can't do this alone.

It's about you and every Republican grassroots leader who believes in restoring the voice to the people.

And it's about empowering you to lead and giving you the tools to help our Party set a new direction for our country.

Successful campaigns cannot be run from inside an office building. The strength of our Party comes from people like you who believe in our values and ideals and promote them in their communities. It’s time to adapt to the social networking and not adapt to socialism.  Our Party deserves much more then just a hand shake once a year by our establishment.  Or a great speech at the Convention. We need the establishment to listen to our concerns, fears, and proposals for solutions for our State and Local Government. If they won’t listen to us then we need to replace them with someone (Republican) who will.

I'm asking you to do two very important things for me:

1)     Please take a moment right now to visit our Utah County Republican Party website  http://www.utahgop.org/NewsnPress.htm and look at all of the candidates who have worked hard to earn your vote.

2) Please consider all of the political scandals you have heard of in our Utah County Politics and please consider it is the tip of the iceberg.  There are more.  Politicians work hard to keep things private and the media finds ways to see their mistakes. The question has been asked for the Federal Government, When is Enough…Enough? Now I ask you the same question in regards to our local level, When is Enough….Enough?

It is so important that you hear my plea to be involved with your Utah County Republican Party.  We need to campaign to educate and mobilize each Republican who wants our State Legislators and Washington to listen to the voice of the people. We may not have Joe the Plumber living in Utah County but I stand with you as your Keith the Tech Guru and Marketing Guru. I want to speak up and lift up our values so everyone knows we all care and are fed up.  Democrats are pushing down our throats there liberal minded agenda attack on our children’s future.  Debt in the Trillions will be held on your grand-children’s shoulders, my shoulders, and my children’s shoulders. I am getting involved to get the Young Republican’s voice heard by seasoned Republicans. I am putting the status quo on check and I need your vote do just that.

Please know that your guidance vote matters tomorrow.

Our Party cannot do anything without you so please attend tomorrow.

Thank you.

I've written a number of times about the control freaks who run the Utah County Republican Party and their efforts to make sure their clique remains in power.

Here's the latest example.

Keith Kuder is running for party secretary in Utah County to replace Susan Bramble, wife of Sen. Curtis Bramble, who is stepping down. Two other candidates for party secretary are Lisa Shepherd, who got a bit sideways with the party establishment last year when she had the audacity to challenge an incumbent legislator in the GOP convention, and Matt Thompson, the son of Utah County Auditor-Treasurer Brian Thompson and the apparent favorite of the party bosses, according to the endorsements.

So perhaps it is not a surprise that Kuder, a relative newcomer to party politics, was told in a conference call from Susan Bramble and Party Chair Marian Monnahan that he had to remove the Republican logo featuring two elephants from his electronic newsletter he was sending out to delegates. He was not a representative of the party, the officers told him he is just a candidate, so he could not use the logo. Shepherd also was told she could not use the elephant logos, although she told the brass she would only remove them on her e-mails, not on materials already printed.

Funny. Taylor Oldroyd, who is running for party chair to replace Monnahan, who also is stepping down, has the Republican logo all over his mailers without an apparent problem. Oldroyd also is the favored candidate of the establishment, based on endorsements.

The Republican logo taboo is interesting in light of the fuss made by Utah County GOP officers when Democratic candidates for public office last year chose not to put the Democratic logo on their campaign signs.

Former Senate President John Valentine, R-Provo, a leader in the Utah County GOP, was a bit dumbfounded himself when learning of the rule against the logos.

"If you're a Republican candidate for anything, you ought to be able to display the Republican logo to show who you are," he says.
Cheers,
Paul Rolly

Rolly: Fun and games in Utah County By Paul Rolly
The Salt Lake Tribune
Salt Lake Tribune Updated:04/17/2009 07:09:12 PM MDT

The Utah County Republican Party for years has been an interesting animal to observe, with accusations of sophomoric shenanigans and clannish behavior.

Utah County's annual Lincoln Day dinner fundraiser often featured a straw vote among attendees for the Republican candidates running for office that particular year. In order to vote, you had to purchase a dinner, so it was a clever way to sell a lot of tables to the campaigns feeling like they needed votes for a good showing.

Then there was the party float incident in which then-Senate Majority Leader Curt Bramble, R-Orem, and then-Senate President John Valentine, R-Orem, persuaded the president of a state-run trade school, who was asking the Legislature for increased funding, to use school funds and resources to build a chassis for the Utah County Republican float.

And there was the formation of the Utah County Legislative PAC, a fundraising arm of the party that was separate from the official Utah County Republican Party with Valentine and Bramble in control, allowing them to determine which candidates got money from the PAC. Bramble also had at least one family member paid to do work for the PAC.

A few months ago, a candidate for president of Utah Valley University was told that in order to help himself become a finalist for the job, he had to apologize to the Utah County legislators because his wife had run for the Legislature as a Democrat and had made legislative ethics an issue.
Now, it's time for the party to elect new officers and Republican Central Committee members, and old suspicions are rising up between the so-called clique and those who have had the audacity to challenge that clique's power.

Lisa Shepherd got sideways with the insiders last year when she challenged incumbent Rep. Keith Grover of Provo for the Republican nomination. She heard from party and legislative leaders, including Bramble, and was discouraged from running.

Things seemed to have calmed after that intra-party struggle, which she lost, until now, when she is running for county party secretary to replace Bramble's wife, Susan, who is stepping down. The Brambles showed up at a recent meet-the-candidates meeting and Curt began leading the discussion, pointedly asking Shepherd questions about the propriety of a party official -- Shepherd is a legislative district chair -- running for public office.

Later, in private conversations, Bramble brought up concerns about Shepherd's daughter being appointed a precinct vice-chair, when there was an opening, and therefore becoming an automatic delegate.

The questions were curious since the Brambles showed no concern when the daughter of GOP State Chairman Stan Lockhart and his wife, Rep. Becky Lockhart, R-Provo, was allowed to run and be elected as a delegate in a precinct she had not yet moved into.

In another Utah County precinct, Hannah DeForest, the vice-chair, had learned she was the automatic head of the precinct when the chair moved, so she appointed a new vice-chair and delegate. Later, she was informed by party brass that she was not the chair and a different person had been appointed to fill that opening. Her sin? She had refused to support the candidacy of an incumbent legislator the year before.

Jacqueline deGaston became a controversial figure in Utah County when she challenged Bramble in the Republican convention last year. She reported favoritism toward the Brambleites and all sorts of manipulation to prevent her supporters from becoming delegates.

She lost at the convention and perhaps was reminded of her insubordination this year when she filed by e-mail to run for one of the Utah County slots on the Republican State Central Committee.

Even though she filed on time, her name was not included in the candidate list submitted to the delegates attending Saturday's convention. After a number of people questioned that omission, her name finally was included.

But she got the message.
